Backstage – How to Write Your Own Monologue, By Charis Joy Jackson

Sometimes as actors, a casting detail may ask you to prepare a monologue or they may provide one. Other times, they may ask you to bring one of your own choosing. It’s not always easy to find monologues. Thankfully, Backstage has a wealth of great options but what you should also consider is that you can write your own.

In the last 12 years, I’ve written countless short films and been a writing advisor on several student and independent feature films. Last year, I released a collection of science fiction and fantasy short stories. Recently, I created a monologue based on one of the stories within that collection, “The Runners.” Here’s an excerpt: 

“…I dream sometimes, about him. Sometimes it’s exactly as it happened, only I know it’s coming, but I can’t do anything to stop it. Like my mind has lost the ability to communicate and I’m no better than a statue during a Taking. Other times, I can change the outcome, I die in his place, or we die together. The Hollywood Reporter – New ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ Musical in the Works From ‘Hamilton’ Director, MGM, By Borys Kit

The studio has enlisted Thomas Kail, the Tony Award-winning helmer of Broadway’s ‘Hamilton’ and ‘In the Heights,’ to direct the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Dan Jinks (‘American Beauty’) and Aaron Harnick.

MGM is making a toast to life, putting together a new feature version of classic stage musical, Fiddler on the Roof.
The studio has enlisted Thomas Kail, the Tony Award-winning helmer of Broadway’s Hamilton and In the Heights, to direct the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Dan Jinks (American Beauty) and Aaron Harnick. Kail will also produce.
Steven Levenson, who wrote the stage musical Dear Evan Hansen and was the showrunner of FX mini-series Fosse/Verdon, is writing the script. Read Entire Article Here

 


 

Variety – MTV Video Music Awards Exploring August Live Show From Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, By Matt Donnelly

MTV is currently working with numerous government and health agencies in hopes of mounting its annual Video Music Awards live from New York this August, Variety can report exclusively.

The show is eyeing an Aug. 30 broadcast date from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for its 36th edition of the VMAs, where MTV honors the best in the music video medium and features performances from top-charting artists. The plans come as New York City attempts to rebound from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, amid ongoing lockdowns and social-distance orders.

“We’re exploring with government officials, the medical community and key stakeholders on how to safely hold the 2020 VMAs at Barclays Center on August 30th,” an MTV spokesperson tells Variety. “The health of everyone involved is our number one priority. Additionally, we are working on several contingency plans to bring music’s biggest night to audiences everywhere.” Read Entire Article Here
