Do you have people in your life that you’ve bonded with at some strange level though you don’t know them very well? Keep them. One of Lizzie Maxwell’s was her dermatologist, Dr. Zacarian, from Massachusetts. While she hadn’t seen him for a few years, they kept in touch.

Dr. Z was always interested in her “poetry.” In fact, her payment to him came in the form of a poem. He made the deal. This gave him her undying loyalty, and love. In one of his last letters to Lizzie (written on a prescription pad), Dr. Z responded to a rather depressing philosophy of life letter she had sent him. He sent this quote by Thomas Huxley:

“The rung of the ladder was never meant to rest upon but only to hold a man long enough to put the other foot somewhat higher”

Dr. Z also told Lizzie that when she was feeling down, she should reach out to someone else who needed help. That was sound advice, though not exactly the sympathy she wanted. It worked though. When you’re feeling really low, go out walking, see someone handicapped, or homeless, and put things in perspective. Do something nice for someone when you’re at your lowest. Get outside of yourself.
