Hi everybody, I’m Pritesh Shah of the Actors Reporter and welcome to the TradeVine. Danika Quinn is on assignment. I’m so excited that you’ve joined us today. For any new viewers, the TradeVine spends its week reading the trades for the best articles to aid veteran actors, aspiring actors or anyone interested in the entertainment industry. Our goal at the TradeVine is to help you stay informed and to keep up with some of the entertainment news you may have missed in the Trades, such as The Hollywood Reporter, Daily Variety, and Backstage.

Back Stage, January 26th – February 1st, 2012 – Not your government’s Internet, by Daniel Lehman. Google and Wikipedia lead blackouts to halt anti-piracy ‘blacklist’ bills and thereby unwittingly picked a fight with the entire online community. These two pieces of congressional legislation, the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act in the Senate, are intended to protect against copyright infringement and intellectual property theft on the Internet by attacking the foreign “rouge” sites that commit or facilitate the illegal distribution of intellectual property. In response, thousands of websites, led by Google and Wikipedia, blacked out or altered their content on January 18th to protest what they dubbed the “Internet blacklist bills.” Because of this, several senators were compelled to withdraw their support the legislation and the vote on the bill has been postponed. I guess time will tell how this will be resolved and how the legislation can be fixed so that they work for everyone except the Internet thieves.

Daily Variety, Monday, January 30th – Maids of Honor, by Christy Grosz and Dave McNary. The cast of ‘Help’ cleaned up at the SAG Awards giving the drama a trio of Screen Actors Guild trophies, for the ensemble cast, the lead actress Viola Davis and supporting actress Octavia Spencer. Congratulations ladies.

Hollywood Reporter, Online Edition, February 1st – Kodak Theater Owner Begins Negotiations to Retain Oscars, by Alex Ben Block. The Kodak name might be coming off the theater in Hollywood but the Oscars could still stay in that location. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has entered negotiations with the CIM Group, which owns the complex, about a new contract to keep the awards ceremony there beyond 2013. CIM is the first to hold formal discussions about the future home of the awards but others are expected to woo the Academy as well, most notably the AEG Group, which operates the Nokia Theater in L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if the Oscars will be moving house.

Back Stage, January 19th-25th – Jets and Sharks reunite, by Jessica Gardner. Dancers from ‘West Side Story’ celebrate the landmark film’s golden anniversary with a memoir. 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of ‘West Side Story.’ A screen version of the original Broadway musical won 10 Oscars in 1962. Several of the original “gang member” dancers shared their memories of working on a cinematic landmark. Dance was such an important part of the film as it was dance that actually pushed the story. Russ Tamblyn, who played the role of Riff, the leader of the Jets, had originally auditioned for the part of Tony. Who knew? Recognize these people? Well, this is what some of the dancers look like today. And here is a photo of the original pictures. There’s Russ Tamblyn in the upper left. Daily Variety, Tuesday, January 24th – New Fox net to woo Hispanics, by Anna Marie De La Fuente. New Corp.’s, Fox International Channels and Columbia’s RCN Television, the group behind “Ugly Betty,” have joined forces to launch Spanish-language TV network MundoFox in the U.S., a move that will test the media conglom’s successful track record with new TV launches against a crowded market. It will take on giant Univision and smaller rival Telemundo for the Spanish language market. Maybe I should start learning Spanish so I can watch Spanish language TV shows.

Hollywood Reporter, February 3rd – The many revolutions of Brad Pitt, by Stephen Galloway. The superstar with multiple Oscar nominations has everything. A brilliant career, a partner he wants to marry and, in his latest film, Moneyball, a seeming disaster he turned into a masterpiece. Still, Hollywood’s producer-actor confesses to a relentless need to question just about everything, including himself. Pitt says “We are all searching for meaning in our lives, love and betterment for ourselves and those around us.”

Ed also just completed starring in the short film Good Men opposite Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) directed by Brian Connors and is touring around festivals across the country. Most recently, Ed portrayed Henry Winkler’s father, Ted Roth, in multiple episodes of Royal Pains on the USA Network.

Back Stage, January 12th-18th – In the Advice section, What types are currently in demand for commercials? Reported by Frank Nestor. According to Rick Miller of Rick Miller Agency in New York, the area that is expanding for commercials is what they call “ethnically ambiguous.” This refers to people of whom you’re not quite sure what their ethnic background is. They could be a combination of multiple races and ethnicities. These are people that can appeal to a very large demographic in advertising. According to Cindy Ramano of Cindy Romano Modeling & Talent Agency in Palm Springs, California, the trend is comedic background and improve training. Also, more casting directors are looking for actors who looks like “real people” or the girl or boy next door. This trend in commercials and ads challenges the common thought that only beautiful people find work in acting.

Daily Variety, Monday, January 16th – Anti-piracy bill hits roadblock, by Ted Johnson. President Obama has a problem. He’s caught between lobbyists for Hollywood and lobbyists for Silicon Valley, both sectors have been big supporters for his campaign. This so called problem has now dealt a setback to efforts to pass sweeping measures to combat online copyright infringement. But, it also reflects the reality for the Hollywood lobbyists that they must now contend with the increasingly influential Internet sector for getting its voice heard in Washington. Huge amounts have been spent. We’ll have to wait and see with all of this fighting for power, if the people will end up winning.
