Hi everybody, I’m Roxy Shih of the Actors Reporter and welcome to the TradeVine. It’s a busy week in Hollywood, but the TradeVine has you and your busy schedule covered. So sit back and relax, our goal at the TradeVine is to help you, the actor, stay informed and to keep up with some of the entertainment news you may have missed in the Trades, such as The Hollywood Reporter, Daily Variety, and Backstage.

Back Stage, May 8th – In the Advice section, Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie Dispense Common Submission Sense. At the Santa Monica Playhouse, the submissions of more than 100,000 actors have come in over the past 52 years. Having worked with several thousand of those actors in more than 600 productions, Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie have noticed a pattern of repeatedly recurring yet fixable errors in submission judgment. An audition is an actor’s first line of defense. So be prepared and accept some of this common submission sense. 1. After reading the casting notice, send an applicable photo. Don’t submit a photograph that was taken 20 years ago. 2. If the notice says “singing required,” don’t submit if you can’t sing. This not only wastes the director’s time but also engenders a certain amount of frustration in those who must search through countless submissions to find even one who fills the bill. 3. Spell names correctly. If you want someone to give you a job, it is wise to check the spelling of the name before writing a personal note. And, 4. Most important of all — always use common sense. Be sure to read the entire casting notice. Break a leg.

The Hollywood Reporter, May 8th – New York City Sees $60 Billion in TV and Film Production Over the Last Decade, by Jordan Zakarin. Mayor Bloomberg also heralded 30,000 production jobs created in the city since 2004. The Mayor has prioritized filming and post-production in New York, offering tax incentives to production companies and helping to open new facilities. Looks like the original home of show business is making a comeback.

Daily Variety, May 9th – Winston Baker will be hosting the 3rd Annual International Film Finance Forum in association with Variety in Cannes once again. The program, to be held on May 18th, will consist of a half-day program including keynote presentations, panel discussions, and various networking events throughout the day. The speaking faculty will address global film finance resources, international incentives and co-production opportunities, and worldwide distribution strategies.
Daily Variety, May 9th – Author Maurice Sendak dies, by the Associated Press. Maurice Sendak, the author of seminal children’s book “Where the Wild Things Are,” revolutionized the genre and how we think about childhood simply by leaving in what so many writers before had excluded. He was 83.

Actors Reporter caught up with Zak Lee as he climbed the Santa Monica Beach stairs for 24 hours straight to benefit foster children. Along with actress Sharon Stone, Homeless Not Toothless is raising money to build a local clinic that will provide free dental care to over 28,000 foster children, contribute to animal rescue and raise awareness to stop bullying. Hi everybody, I’m Roxy Shih of the Actors Reporter and welcome to the TradeVine. It’s been a beautiful week in Hollywood. We’ve collected some great articles. Our goal at the TradeVine is to help you stay informed and to keep up with some of the entertainment news you may have missed in the Trades, such as The Hollywood Reporter, Daily Variety, and Backstage.

Back Stage, May 1st – In the Advice section, Marc Warzecha Recommends Improv for Actors. When Marc Warzecha refers to “improvisation,” he is referring to the type of comic improvisation that one would learn at The Groundlings, iO, The Second City, UCB, or any of the other great improv training programs around the world. While most of these theaters have different areas of focus in their advanced levels, the foundational principles are the same. So what does this style of improv do for the actor? 1. You loosen up. Improv training begins with the idea of playfulness. 2. Improv instills fearlessness. In improvisation, one learns to get up onstage and perform for an audience with no planned setting, character, or dialogue. And, 3. It’s about playfulness and truth. Most new improv students are surprised at how little focus there is on comedy. Trying to be funny is death in improv.

The Hollywood Reporter, May 2nd – Megaupload’s Kim Dotcom: Inside the Wild Life and Dramatic Fall of the Nerd Who Burned Hollywood, by Daniel Miller and Matthew Belloni. He wanted to be the next Steve Jobs and talked about starring in a reality TV show. But the outrageous ex-hacker and self proclaimed Dr. Evil, who collected yachts and $400,000 supercars as his file sharing website amassed 180 million users, faces 50 years in prison as showbiz braces for the nastiest piracy fight ever. The 38-year-old had become an online celebrity, as much for his over-the-top lifestyle, supermodel hot-tub parties and the slick YouTube video in which he raps about Megaupload: “It’s a hit! It’s a hit!” Dotcom was a natural target for U.S. authorities, which are believed to have looked into Megaupload partly at Hollywood’s urging.

The Hollywood Reporter, May 2nd, – Amazon Studios to Develop Original Comedies and Kids Series, by Lacey Rose. Much as it has done in the film space, Amazon is attempting to democratize the TV development process by letting creators submit their proposals for audience review. Amazon Studios is pushing into television development with original comedy and kids programming. Since Amazon Studios’ late-2010 launch, more than 700 test movies and 7,000 scripts have been submitted; 15 movie projects are currently in development. With its TV foray, being led by Joe Lewis, formerly of 20th Century Fox and Comedy Central, and National Geographic Kids’ Tara Sorensen, Amazon Studios intends to option one new project to its development slate each month.

The Entertainment Industries Council presents PRISM Awards to those actors who display unparalleled authenticity in their portrayals of characters in productions related to mental health and/or substance use issues, including alcohol abuse, illegal drug use, prescription drug abuse, depression, suicide, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, bipolar, and other related topics.

This years’ honorees of the 16th Annual PRISM Awards are Stana Katic and Jon Huertas (ABC’s Castle), Caterina Scorsone (ABC’s Private Practice), and Craig T. Nelson (NBC’s Parenthood).

In the film categories, Warrior (Lionsgate Films) received the award for Feature Film ‐ Substance Use, while Take Shelter (Sony Pictures Classics) took the award for Feature Film ‐ Mental Health.

In the TV comedy categories, William H. Macy was honored for Performance in a Comedy Series for Showtime’s Shameless. Shameless’ Season 1 also won the Comedy Series – Substance Use award. The Comedy Series nod for Mental Health went to the “Born This Way” episode of Fox’s Glee.

In Drama Series Episode ‐ Substance Use, the award went to NBC’s Parenthood’s “Damage Control” episode. Performance in a Drama Episode was earned by ABC’s Castle’s Jon Huertas and Stana Katic. Castle also took the award for the “Kill Shot” episode in the Drama Series Episode – Mental Health category. The winner for Drama Series Multi‐Episode Storyline – Substance Use was TNT’s Southland which followed John Cooper’s drug addiction, while Drama Series Multi‐Episode Storyline – Mental Health was awarded to Parenthood for its Asperger’s storyline about Max Braverman. Parenthood’s Craig T. Nelson walked away with an award for Male Performance in a Drama Series Multi‐Episode Storyline. Female Performance in a Drama Series Multi‐Episode Storyline went to Private Practice’s Caterina Scorsone (ABC).

For TV Movie or Miniseries, the winner was HBO’s The Sunset Limited. Performance in a TV Movie or Miniseries honors were shared by Bringing Ashley Home’s Jennifer Morrison (Lifetime) and Cyberbully’s Emily Osment (ABC). The PRISM Award winner for Daytime Drama Series Storyline was NBC’s Days of Our Lives. For Teen or Children’s Program, the honors went to PBS’s In The Mix – “Youth Against Meth… Not Even Once.” Dr. Drew’s Lifechangers – “Pill Popping” (CW) was the award winner for Talk Show Episode, while Unscripted Non‐Fiction Program was a tie between Season 1 of Bad Sex (Logo) and Season 5 of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew (VH1).

In the category of Documentary, News Magazine or Biographical Program – Substance Use, Vanguard – “Sex, Lies and Cigarettes” was honored,

Well, we, at the TradeVine, had you in mind as we searched articles this week. Our goal at the TradeVine is to help you stay informed and to keep up with some of the entertainment news you may have missed in the Trades, such as The Hollywood Reporter, Daily Variety, and Backstage.

Back Stage, Online Edition April 2012 – Don’t miss the Spotlight on Representation. Back Stage offers actors advice on how to secure representation and get seen by agents and managers. Manager, Josselyne Herman-Saccio talks on Agents, saying The most important thing is that the agent is excited about the talent. If it’s a big agency or a small agency, it doesn’t matter. If they have an agent who’s excited about them, that goes a long way. And, Agent Fatima Wilson talks about Managers. Her advice, When looking for a manager, you should seek out someone reputable and definitely get a referral. Do your research and find out with whom the potential manager has worked, because managers are not part of a union and do not have to follow guidelines. Make sure you know what the manager has done and if the clients have had great experiences. 

Variety April 27th – The BritWeek Film & TV Summit presented by Variety and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Los Angeles explored a range of topics, including opportunities in the UK for film and TV content creators, resources for UK filmmakers in the US, scripted and reality programming trends and the reasons British projects succeed or fail in the US and vice versa. The summit provided a welcoming environment to network and establish valuable new connections with likeminded filmmakers and business executives from the film, television and digital media worlds.

The Hollywood Reporter, April 25th – Ryan Seacrest: 5 Things I Learned From Dick Clark. From being nice to refusing to be a quitter, a protégé shares the master’s key teachings. 1. Be nice. Sure, he was known for his boyish looks, but he was also a true gentleman — always, without exception.  2. People are just people. He didn’t discriminate and was not discerning with his kindness. He made everyone feel as if they were the only one in the room. 3. Look beyond the camera. Dick was an amazing broadcaster. But he decided early on that he wanted to be in the business and not just a face in front of the camera. 4. Build a great team. Dick was a shrewd businessman, but he was also a terrific boss. Many of the people who worked with him did so for more than 30 years. 5. Refuse to be a quitter. Dick faced some enormous challenges after his stroke. And despite facing public criticism for fighting through those challenges on-air, he refused to quit what he loved doing most. He will truly be missed.
