Back Stage, March 31st-April 6th, 2011. In the Advice section, “What acting teacher inspired you?” reported by Jessica Gardner. According to Anthony Meindl, an acting teacher in Los Angeles, what makes an actor great depends on the desire inside of the actor to want to be with people. This is not to objectify people in the name of some “acting” exercise or to judge them, but to really enjoy humanity. Become curious about other peoples’ stories, what they’ve overcome, and their challenges. Love being with others, which ultimately becomes about our learning about how to love being with ourselves. Want to get more advice from Anthony Meindl, put his name in the search engine at W W W dot Actors Entertainment dot com (www.ActorsEntertainment.com) for an hour long interview with Coach Meindl on ActorsE Chat.

Daily Variety, Tuesday, April 4th. “Google counters Viacom salvo,” by Ted Johnson. Google is pushing back at Viacom’s effort to reverse a judge’s decision last year that YouTube was well within the “safe harbor” provisions of copyright law and not liable for thousands of copyrighted clips from TV shows and movies posted to the site. Viacom, which sued Google and YouTube in a one billion dollar copyright infringement suit, appealed the decision arguing that it would radically transform the copyright system and act as an invitation for rampant infringement across the Internet. The decision places the burden of identifying infringing material on the copyright owner rather than the user-generated site. It is interesting to note that no single clip has been identified that YouTube knew was infringing, but failed to take down properly.

Daily Variety, April 5th. “Latino Leverage,” by Cynthia Littleton. On the heels of the U.S. Census reports underscoring the growing diversity of the American viewing public, major media players are starting to zero in on the potential in programming to ethnic niches. Fox announced the formation of Fox Hispanic Media, and Comcast cemented a specific timetable for launching the first three minority-owned channels. Bounce TV, an Atlanta-based startup digital channel, whose backers include Andrew Young and Martin Luther King III, unveiled programs targeting African American audiences. Something for everybody.
