Through 4th September – Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947-2016. The inaugural exhibition at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel includes post-war and contemporary works from the likes of Ruth Asawa, Lee Bontecou, Eva Hesse, Yayoi Kusama, Hannah Wilke and more. 2nd September – Dance Downtown. The Music Center offers a free, joyous mashup of music and dancing all summer long, with different themes (90s, line dancing, cumbia, etc.) and free dance lessons plus live bands. DANCE – DOWNTOWN Los Angeles, California





2nd – 4th September – 626 Night Market. America’s largest Asian food market spans the course of Santa Anita Park’s front Paddock Gardens (285 W Huntington Dr). This lively market, complete with over 150 Asian street food and booze peddlers, live music, artists, films, games, and beyond, won’t put itself to bed until 1am. 626 NIGHT MARKET

2nd – 4th September – Hollywood Bowl. Nobody’s film credits can compare to John Williams: Star Wars, E.T., Jurassic Park,Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and literally a hundred others. The 84-year-old composer isn’t slowing down anytime soon; he’s returning to the Hollywood Bowl armed with the LA Phil and the score to Star Wars: The Force Awakens along with other favorite themes from a galaxy far, far away. Fellow film composer David Newman opens the show with a program of movie classics set to clips on the big screen. HOLLYWOOD BOWL Hollywood, California

2nd – 4th September – While you won’t find much Alice in the Wonderland series of festivals, you will find a whimsical, carnival-like atmosphere drenched in Day-Glo and pulsating lasers. The five stages at the San Manuel Amphitheater are musical platforms just as much as they’re art installations, with names like the Upside-Down Room and the Temple of Om. LA county fair


2nd – 25th September – LA has changed immeasurably since 1921, when this event was first staged as an agricultural fair. However, the perennially popular event still has farm-friendly appeal (livestock beauty contests, local produce) alongside the more modern acrobats, wine tastings, exhibitions and concerts. 4th – 7th September – Now in its 37th year, Telluride Film Festival has established a sort of North American cinephile frenzy. TELLURIDE FILM FESTIVAL Telluride, Colorado





8th September – Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk. This self-guided tour, which started in 2004 and has flourished as much of Downtown has cleaned up, encompasses more than 40 galleries and museums spread throughout the area’s many sub-districts, including Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo and Gallery Row on Main and Spring Streets in the Historic Core, Sixth St. and Spring St. Los Angeles, CA. 8th – 15th September – Geek out with fellow TV nerds at Paley Fest’s fall preview, the annual weeklong festival of fall pilot screening and panel discussions with the cast and creators of the hottest TV shows. PALEY FESTt Los Angeles, California; New York





8th – 18th September – Toronto International Film Festival. Festival screenings and market screenings have proved equally as important a launching ground for films, and Toronto has become one of the few unmissable film festivals in world. TIFF Toronto, Canada





9th – 17th September – Melbourne Underground Film Festival. When underground film director Richard Wolstencroft’s feature film “Pearls Before Swine” was not accepted by the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), Wolstencroft authored a letter of complaint to MIFF, a letter whose call for support for underground and local film was enthusiastically backed by other frustrated emerging film-makers. With their support, Richard Wolstencroft established the Melbourne Underground Film Festival in 2000 as a home for avante-garde, cutting edge, and underground film from both local filmmakers and abroad. 17th – 27th September – Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy has been held annually ever since. 25th September – 11 October – New York Film Festival: In almost 50 years NYFF has built itself as a significant publicity generating festival. Its programme is predominantly festival circuit films, with an absurdly large number of Cannes selections but the most interesting appeal lies in its Avant Garde strand, almost unmatched anywhere else in the world.
