International Entertainment Event Calendar – January 2017 – Happy New Year!

Through 19th March – The Broad – This examination of different approaches to figuration and self-representation takes over the Broad’s first floor more than 50 mostly post-’80s works. Local artist Thomas Houseago’s imposing 15-foot-tall Giant Figure (Cyclops) sculpture, in its U.S. debut, sits at the exhibition’s entrance. The rest of the show compiles a range of human figures, from Jean-Michel Basquiat’s primitivist profiles to Alex Israel’s selfie-shaped canvases, plus more than 25 other artists, including Leon Golub, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Georg Baselitz, Takashi Murakami and Andy Warhol. 1st January – 28th February – Hey! Ho! Let’s Go. Anniversary of the Ramones’ landmark, three-cord, 29-minute-long eponymous debut album. Celebrating the latter is The Grammy Museum’s new, much-anticipated exhibit, Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk, co-organized by the Queens Museum, where it opened earlier this year. Known both for her stirring torch ballads and bouncy synth pop of the late 70’s and 80’s, Melissa Manchester makes her Rockport debut on the heels of an acclaimed new comeback record. 28th January – Influences: Wildflower and Wagner. The Reno Chamber Orchestra presents Catherine Manoukian. The performance begins with the seldom performed yet stunningly beautiful Violin Concerto by the English composer Sir Edward Elgar. Performed by the Canadian violinist Catherine Manoukian the concerto is a marathon for both soloist and orchestra. Nightingale Concert Hall, Reno, NV.
