The TradeVine December 25th, 2009
Back Stage, Special Double Issue, December 17th-30th, “When the ‘World’ Stops Turning … Another New York soap falls and raises questions about the future,” by Daniel Holloway who can be reached at dholloway@backstage.com. When CBS announced Dec. 8th that it was canceling the 54-year-old soap opera “As the World Turns,” it was not surprising. We have recently seen the final episode of another CBS daytime soap, “Guiding Light,” then the longest-running scripted program on television. It’s not doing well for the soaps in general. In a cost-cutting effort, ABC’s “All My Children” will vacate its New York studios and begin shooting in Southern California in January, while another ABC soap, “One Life to Live” is rumored to be on death watch. For decades, hundreds of working New York actors have relied on a steady stream of opportunities flowing from the soaps. New York used to be the place to shoot. Since 2004, productions shot in New York were eligible for a 30 percent tax rebate from the state on all below-the-line costs and a 5 percent rebate from the city. But funding for the city program ran out in July, and the state program is expected to be tapped out soon.
The Hollywood Reporter, International Weekend edition, Dec 18th-20th, 2009. in the CLIPS section, “Follow That Dream” Turner Classic Movies a.k.a TCM will air a 20-hour marathon of Elvis Presley movies and concert documentaries Jan 8th to celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday. Elvis at 75 years-old. Can you imagine?
Daily Variety, Dec 21st, 2009 “Fantasy’ game sells 1 mil units” in Japan, by Mark Schilling. There are many ways that an actor can make not only a living, but also a career. And one of those is to participate either musically or as an actor in a video game. How lucrative might that be? Well, Square Enix’s “Final Fantasy 13” game for PlayStation 3 console sold 1 million units on Thursday last week, which was its first day on sale in Japan. According to figures compiled by games biz mag Enterbrain, there are 4 million PlayStation 3 owners in Japan. That’s a lot of players all in one place. The game will go on sale in the United States and Europe on March 9, 2010.
The Daily Variety, Dec 22nd 2009, “SAG Updates Casting site,” by Dave McNary. The Screen Actors Guild has upgraded its 3-year-old iActor online casting directory, touting it as the go-to source for casting agents, producers and new media developers. About 26,000 SAG members have created individual profiles , which include headshots, resumes, video and audio clips. Mmbers must have their dues current to have their profiles listed.
