The Thalians Mental Health Center was started by a group of well known young actors back in 1955. They wanted to give back some of their blessings to the community. Their mission was to achieve better mental and emotional health for disturbed children. In order to raise the funds for the clinic, this all volunteer organization started a yearly gala celebration attended and performed by all the major stars of Hollywood. The Thalians is Hollywood at its best… striving for Mental Health from pediatric through geriatric.
The Thalians is well-known for the once a year fall Gala and other seasonal fundraisers and parties, The Thalians Mental Health Center was the first building to be constructed on the Cedars-Sinai campus as a direct result of their relentless efforts.
The Mental Health Center is hard at work all year long and is responsible for helping of millions of people afflicted with mental disorders and addictive behaviors. The many innovative research projects are focused on achieving break-throughs in mental health treatments.
The annual Gala Ball honors super stars with the Mr. & Ms. Wonderful Award personally designed and created by Walt Disney himself for The Thalians. It has become a most sought after collectors’ item.
Honorees are selected because they dazzle us not only with their theatrical performances but they dazzle us with their philanthropic performances as well. Past honorees include such stars as Lucille Ball, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Carol Burnett, Bob Hope, Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, Shirley MacLaine, Liza Minnelli, to name but a few. This year, The Thalians honored Clint Eastwood as Mr. Wonderful. On hand on the red carpet were Debbie Reynolds, Ruta Lee, Rich Little, Brooke Long, Melora Harden, Freda Payne, Gloria Allred, Patty McCormick, Joan Van Ark, Elke Sommer, Donna Mills, Jo Anne Worley, Mamie Van Doren, Cloris Leachman, and many others.
The Thalians is an all volunteer organization. We welcome those who are willing to invest the time and effort to support our activities in the quest for achieving better mental health for everyone. You will work hard, but have the time of your life by becoming a “Thalian.”
